Qualified Accounts

Qualified accounts have some type of tax advantage surrounding retirement savings. Plain speak: you pay no taxes on your money now and it grows tax free until you withdraw it. This usually results in a larger pile of money for you as the investor.

These include:

  • Roth IRA
  • Traditional IRA
  • 401K
  • Simplified Employee Pension (SEP) Plans
  • 403(b)s
  • Thrift Savings Plan (TSPs)
  • Savings Incentive Match Plans for Employees (SIMPLE) IRAs
  • Salary Reduction Simplified Employee Pensions (SARSEPs)
  • Profit Sharing

You can begin withdrawing by age 59 ½ without incurring a 10% penalty. Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) are due by age 70 ½ at the latest.

Non-Qualified Accounts

After-tax money, which includes, but not limited to, the following:

  • Certificates of Deposits (CDs)
  • Annuities
  • Mutual Funds
  • Money Markets
  • Savings

With a non-qualified plan, there are no deductions, but the principal is never taxed twice. Instead, the interest is taxed once withdrawn. Also, there are no required minimum distributions on nonqualified plans.
